Finding Motivation When Life Gets You Down
In the fast-paced world that we live in, it is all to easy to find day-to-day activities overwhelming. Most adults face each day with a full schedule of social and family obligations while at the same time working to achieve career and financial goals. With so many things going on at the same time, it is not uncommon to find yourself over stressed and under motivated. This is especially true when faced with the setbacks and disappointments that are unavoidable in life.
Finding the motivation to carry you through these trying times is key to avoid depression, anxiety, and stress — all of which can have a significant impact on your health. If you are lacking the internal fortitude to deal with all life throws at you, consider the following tips to help find that motivation.
Take a step back
Before you can charge forward into the fray that is your life, you must first take a moment to step back and gather your thoughts. Despite your best efforts, motivation is not something that can be forced. In fact, the more you try to push the issue, the less likely you will be to succeed which can compound an already dire situation. Taking a step back can give you a much needed breather and offer you the opportunity to get things in perspective before moving forward.
Focus on your vision
It cannot be stressed enough the importance of having goals. Short- and long-term goals give you something to work toward. Without a vision of where you would like to end up, how can you possibly get there? The answer is simple: you can't. While most of us have imagined where we would like to be in five, 10, or 15 years, it is all too easy to forget these goals when times get tough. This shortsightedness can make it impossible to find the motivation needed to push through a difficult period in your life. Focus on your vision and you will find a way to reach your goals.
Find a support system
Whatever it is you are dealing with, rest assured that someone, somewhere has gone through the same thing before. Everyone has experienced setbacks in life, and you can draw strength and motivation by surrounding yourself with a strong support system. This may be family members, friends, or even a support group. Sharing the weight of your burden and learning how others have handled similar situations can be a big motivator.
Refuse to give up
When you feel as if nothing is working in your favor, you may be tempted to simply give up. When this thought crosses your mind, ignore the notion, as giving up is not an option. When you work harder, especially in the face of challenging conditions, you will eventually see the results. It may not be immediate or as soon as you would like, but you will get there. As you work harder, small successes will be gained which provide motivation. It becomes cyclical. With each step forward, your momentum gains speed. Before you know it, you have overcome whatever was holding you back.
We have all heard the saying "when life give you lemons, make lemonade," but this advice is often easier said then done. When faced with difficult times, it is important to remember that how you respond to a crisis will determine your quality of life moving forward. Finding a way to stay motivated and overcome obstacles in your path will ensure you reach all of your goals, even if you get there a bit later than you originally hoped.
