How To Avoid Getting Sick At Your Workout Spot
Unless you plan on spending the rest of your life in quarantine, you will at some point have to come in contact with germs and the people that carry them. This is not an option, therefore you must learn how to be out and about in the world while minimizing your exposure to the germs and illnesses that will undoubtedly be present. While most people go to the gym to improve their health and fitness, it remains a breeding ground for germs. With the cold and flu season upon us, this is the first place to try to avoid getting sick. Here we look at how you can do this without giving up your workout spot.
Keep your distance
You don't want to be rude, but the the closer you are to a sick person, the more likely you will come in contact with their germs. When a person is coughing or sneezing, germs can travel up to six feet from the individual who is sick. If you spot a person who is noticeably sick, keep your distance to avoid being exposed to germs. An individual who is severely ill beyond the normal sniffles should be reported to the manager of the establishment.
Benefit from being a considerate member
It is standard operating procedure for gyms to provide and require the use of cleaning solutions for members to clean machines and equipment. Despite the fact that members are required to clean machines before and after use, many members do not do so. You will benefit by being a considerate gym member in that properly cleaning a machine before use and after your workout will reduce the spread of germs. Do not skimp on the cleaning, either. Be sure to wipe down all surfaces with which the previous member may have had contact.
Bring your own supplies
Gym towels and mats may host any number of germs that can make you sick. While reputable establishments should have a very thorough cleaning regimen, you can avoid any chance of contact with germs if you supply your own towels or mats. There are mats available which prevent the growth of bacteria and odor; consider investing in one of these if you are a regular gym user.
Drink plenty of water
Not only is this necessary to replace lost fluids, but being hydrated also helps your body in other ways. When your mucous membranes are hydrated, it is actually more difficult for germs to stick to them and result in sickness.
Pay attention to hygiene
It goes without saying that gym bags should be kept clean. If you are one of the many people who has a very busy schedule and are lucky enough to fit in a workout, it may be all too easy to forget to remove gym gear immediately upon arriving home. The longer your sweaty gear sits in your bag, the higher the likelihood that germs will survive and grow. A clean bag promotes better health.
Proper habits while at the gym will also reduce your exposure to nasty germs and bacteria. Always wear the proper foot wear in locker rooms and other public areas used by members. This will reduce the chances of picking up fungus that can lead to athlete's foot, warts, and other issues.
By taking the steps mentioned here, you can reduce your exposure to germs that cause sickness, while at the same time keeping up with your exercise routine. Despite your best efforts at the gym, it is impossible to completely avoid germs in your other day-to-day activities. If you find yourself coming down with a cold or experience other symptoms of sickness, do yourself and other members of your gym a favor and stay home. This will allow your body the rest and time needed to recover from an illness.
