Exercising is one of the best things we can do to promote longevity, yet so many of us do not work out on a regular basis. Benefits of regular exercise include more energy, better sleep, improved mood, a healthier heart, weight management and the reduction of many chronic illnesses. Having the mindset that exercise is fun instead of a chore just might help you get moving and on the way to better health.

Here are some tips that will help you look forward to exercising.

1. Work Out With a Friend

Finding someone to exercise with can keep you motivated and make it more fun. Be sure to pick someone that is full of energy and will keep you on track. Try to avoid partnering with someone who is not likely to follow through or will distract you from your goals.

2. Take a Group Fitness Class

Group classes can be a lot of fun and are a great way to meet people. Try to find a class that is run by an enthusiastic, motivational instructor. There are so many types of classes out there that you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding one that sounds fun to you. Options include everything from zumba to spinning, Pilates, kickboxing, yoga and step aerobics.

3. Pick an Activity You Enjoy

There is such a variety of things you can do to exercise. Many people get in the mindset that they have to join a gym or run on a treadmill. Instead, find exciting things you can do in your area. Ideas include golfing (make sure you walk the course), swimming, tennis, hiking, biking, in-line skating, or even gardening. Other sports to consider are volleyball, softball or baseball, basketball and even shuffle board.

4. Utilize an MP3 Player

One great way to get motivated is to listen to upbeat music or motivational books while exercising. Pick music that you will enjoy and crank it up or find a motivational book that will keep you going. You can easily download music and audio books right off the internet.

5. Mix it Up

Finding a variety of activities that you enjoy will definitely help to keep you motivated and moving. If you stick to the same exercise routine day in and out, you are apt to get bored and to quit. Mix it up, maybe sign up for a group fitness class once a week, get together with a friend once a week and walk at a park or join a tennis league. There are so many options available that, with a little bit of planning, you should never get bored.

6. Set Goals and Challenge Yourself

Finally, one of the best things you can do to keep on track is to set goals. Try not to get caught up in weight loss goals but instead, challenge yourself to train for a 5K or push yourself to go to the next level in a spinning class. Push yourself outside your comfort zone. When we put forth that extra energy, we often realize that we can do it — which motivates us even more to keep going.
