In fact, a study out of Europe suggests that drinking upwards of three to five cups (or more) a day could possibly reduce the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

It turns out that milk really does do a body good, especially when it’s chocolate milk. In fact, several studies have found that milk is more effective than certain high-tech carbohydrate drinks when it comes to the our muscles recovering from strenuous exercises like cycling, soccer, and weightlifting.

Doctors have discovered an effective way to help the mental development of premature babies by supplementing their diets with the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA. A major lipid in the brain, DHA is apparently not present in sufficient quantities in pre-term babies and as a result, predisposes them to an increased risk for impaired mental development.

A recent analysis in the Annals of Internal Medicine lends further support to what medical experts have believed for years: vitamin D (the sun vitamin) deficiencies increase the risk of bone fractures, especially in the elderly. The relationship between our intake of vitamin D and bone health has been a much debated topic in nutrition circles, with its deficiency being linked to hip fractures as well as osteoporosis.

It turns out that women who have a vitamin B12 (folic acid) deficiency early in their pregnancy may have an increased risk of having children with disabling or even fatal neural tube defects, as determined by a study published in the journal Pediatrics. The neural tube is the part of the fetus that will develop into the brain and spinal cord.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, an extract from grape seeds actually kills leukemia cells. In fact, it was found that up to 76% of leukemia cells in the laboratory underwent cell suicide after being exposed to the extract within a 24 hour period.

Long promoted as a cholesterol free food that is high in protein and fiber, it turns out that yellow split peas might help lower your blood pressure and help prevent kidney disease, as well. New findings out of Canada have found that a protein found in yellow garden peas was able to have positive health benefits in animal models.
