Both fish oil and flaxseed oils contain omega-3 fatty acids which have shown to be beneficial in lowering cholesterol in some studies. Aside from preference or cost, does either have an advantage in health benefits?

A new study has provided preliminary evidence that a compound found in black currants may help people who suffer from asthma to breathe. The compound in question is known as epigallocatechin, and it was found to enhance natural defense mechanisms in lung tissue by decreasing inflammation as well as inflammation inducing metabolic reactions.

The DASH diet, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, was originally intended to help people lower their blood pressure. A new study from Duke University found that hypertensive patients who used the diet and lost weight also had improvement in their mental abilities.

Whole grain rice has been gaining more positive reviews for their health benefits. In fact, research shows that whole grain rice is rich in fiber and disease-fighting compounds. Whole grain rice is also a wonderful alternative to pastas and breads and there are many kinds of rice that go beyond boring white rice. Whole grain rice has been minimally processed so it keeps more of its nutrients that white rice.

It sometimes seems that the people of my generation were in a way fortunate we missed the wave of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that is such a big part of the modern diet. While we consumed huge amounts of junk food and soda pop, most of it was sweetened with sugar, and HFCS had yet to really appear on the scene.

At first glance, a diet lacking in meat and dairy may not seem appropriate for people with diabetes because it would seem to be too high in carbohydrates. Recent studies on a vegan diet published in the journal Diabetes Care beg to differ with that theory.

There was a time not too long ago in this country where drinking coffee was a fairly routine and generic experience. Taste was superceded by the need to consume caffeine as economically and conveniently as possible. As a result, people generally opted for either affordable but low quality coffees that tended towards blandness, or instant coffee, whose flavor was rough. However, you couldn’t beat the convenience.
